The Men: Photos

The 111th Men at Fort Dix, NJ, June 1945 Art Brooks has identified the officers and a few of the men in the center front row. Find the four men in front center wearing the darker jackets with belts; then move to the second man to the left of the first officer on the left to start the identifications: the large man is Tech Sergeant James Roush; First Sergeant Bill Mayo; Lt. Dante Vezzoli (who soon left the 111th to go to Army Intelligence because he knew Italian; he retired a full colonel); Cpt. Lionel Malsbury, the CO at the time; Lt. Art Brooks; Lt. Perry Witt; Master Sergeant Frank Gomez, and Sgt. Harold Goerges. My dad, Edward

Perry Witt; Master Sergeant Frank Gomez, and Sgt. Harold Goerges. My dad, Edward “Pinky” Johnson is in the front row, ninth from the right, and on his left is his buddy John Andrews. On the back row, third man to the right of the man holding flag–only the flag stick shows (and counting the man holding the flag) is John Raisler, and to his immediate right is his buddy, Joe Sedlacek. To Sedlacek’s right is Leroy Faehling. Also on the back row, 20th man from the left, is Severt “Sy” Stroberg.

We have learned from Roger Rickon, one of the five known “survivors” of the unit and pictured here, front row, far left holding cigarette, that this photo was taken on V-E Day, May 8, 1945, as some of the men of the 111th celebrated the end of the war in Europe at their favorite bar, in Neubeckum, northern Germany. Directly behind and to the left of Rickon is Stanley Carlson. Other names: man in center, corporal stripes and hat tilted to our left, is Frank Turner; back row, fifth man from left, below man standing, is Joe Sedlacek; man in front middle with lower face in shadow is Roland Unangst.
Cpl. Marcus Frank Turner, of Merriam, KS (1921-2011); his son, Dan, sent this photo and the two above and the one below.

  1. Sergio Gomez says:

    Andrea,
In the picture of the 111th at Ft. Dix, I’m fairly sure that Leo De La Garza is standing next to your dad on his left.

  2. Lynn Green says:

I believe I just found my dad, Severt (Sy) Stroberg, in the panorama picture. Back row, 20th person from the left. I also saw one that might be him sitting in the truck behind the steering wheel. Very cool. Thank you for contacting me.

  3. Pat (Raymer) Macchiarolo says:

Although I can’t seem to find my dad in he panorama photo, I do believe that he is the mechanic on the left in the “Nut House” photo.

  4. Doc Snafu says:

    splendid work – realy fantastic

  5. Fano Suarez says:

Hello, nice web indeed. In one of your pics, caption says: “Alton “Catfish” Bailey, Caledonia, MS, the unit’s cook, sipping coffee in the Three Fields Area, Normandy, July 1944”,…It’s an American Red Cross Clubmobile and you can see a woman inside the wagon, in shadow. She is Frances Goodwin, member of the Clubmobile “DANIEL BOONE”, you can see the initials of the nickname of the Clubmobile “D.B.” in the coffee urn.
